Navigating Postpartum Depression & Anxiety: When to Seek Help
Bringing a new baby into the world is often described as one of life’s most joyful moments—but for many mothers, the postpartum period can also bring intense emotional challenges. Postpartum depression (PPD) and postpartum anxiety (PPA) are common, treatable conditions that affect 1 in 7 women, yet they are often misunderstood or dismissed.
Signs & Symptoms of Postpartum Depression
Postpartum depression typically emerges within the first few weeks after birth but can also begin during pregnancy or up to a year postpartum. Common symptoms include:
Persistent sadness or hopelessness
Loss of interest in activities once enjoyed
Changes in appetite or sleep (beyond what's expected with a newborn)
Difficulty bonding with your baby
Thoughts of worthlessness, shame, or guilt
Feeling overwhelmed or unable to cope
Signs & Symptoms of Postpartum Anxiety
While less discussed, postpartum anxiety is just as prevalent. It can occur alone or alongside depression and often includes:
Excessive worry, often about your baby’s health or safety
Racing thoughts that are hard to control
Panic attacks or physical symptoms like a racing heart, nausea, or shortness of breath
Trouble sleeping even when the baby is asleep
Feeling “on edge” or restless
When to Seek Help
It’s time to reach out for support if:
Symptoms persist longer than two weeks
They interfere with daily functioning or your ability to care for yourself or your baby
You feel disconnected from your baby or overwhelmed by guilt or fear
You’re having thoughts of harming yourself or your baby (seek help immediately)
